A disassembly video published on YouTube allows you to discover the bowels of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra and in particular its imposing main photo module.

After a month and a half of waiting, this week Xiaomi presented the result of its collaboration with camera manufacturer Leica. These are three smartphones that were presented on Monday July 4 in China – and which will not be released in France – the Xiaomi 12S, 12 S Pro and 12S Ultra.
The most interesting model is undoubtedly the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. It must be said that this smartphone incorporates a main 1-inch format photo sensor, like the Sharp Aquos R6 and R7, already developed in partnership with Leica, the Leica Leitz Phone 1 and the Sony Xperia Pro-I. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra also benefits from a photo module with a rather original design, with a circular shape that takes up a lot of space on the back of the smartphone. However, if one could think a priori that the main photo module was positioned in the center of the photo block, this is not the case as a disassembly video reveals.
A massive main photo module
Published by the Chinese YouTube channel WekiHome, this video focuses on the various components of the large photo block of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. What to allow not only to discover the electronic circuit, but also the objectives used as well as the various sensors integrated into the telephone. In particular, we can see the impressive format of the Sony IMX989 sensor used for the wide-angle camera of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. With its 1-inch type format, it indeed offers dimensions of 8.8 x 13.2 mm. Remember that this is a 50.3 megapixel sensor with 1.6 μm side photosites. It is thus able to take pictures of 12.58 megapixels in pixel binning — by grouping the pixels in groups of four — with pixels of 3.2 μm side.

Above all, who says larger photo sensor also says bigger lens. To associate a 23 mm equivalent lens, Xiaomi had to offer a photo module, sensor included, 11.06 mm thick. This explains the bubble shape of the photo block.
The video also allows you to discover all the other components of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, whether it is its 4860 mAh battery, its coil for wireless charging or the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip.
As a reminder, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is available in China in three configurations – 8/128 GB, 12/256 GB or 12/512 GB – from 5999 yuan, or 857 euros. On the other hand, no marketing in France is planned for this high-end smartphone.
