According to a new report relayed by Cnet, Google could remove nearly 900,000 applications from the PlayStore for security reasons.
Like Apple, Google no longer hesitates to tighten its security policy for its PlayStore application store. As the Mountain View firm announced on April 6, 2022, it was time to clean up by deleting the oldest apps that did not meet the latest API levels.
In doing so, the developers were avoiding Google’s restrictions on permissions to ignore recent Android security and privacy efforts that have been in place over the past few years. Clearly, the four-color colossus wants to make the applications in its store safer.
Nearly 900,000 apps at risk
” Starting November 1, 2022, existing apps that do not target an API level within two years of the last major Android release will not be able to be installed by new users with devices running higher Android OS versions. at the target API level of applications “, could we read.
A report recently viewed bycnettells us a bit more about the amount of applications involved. In total, it would be no less than 869,000 apps that could be removed from the PlayStore because they do not comply with the company’s new rules. This is a significant part of the store.
In 2021, there were indeed 3.6 million applications on the company’s platform. The 869,000 pieces of software placed in Google’s viewfinder therefore represent, in theory, nearly 25% of the applications present on the service. Obviously, the developers have time to react to rectify the situation.
A decision that could irritate some
If an app has not been updated according to the desired conditions, then Google would hide it from its PlayStore, preventing users from downloading it. Inevitably, this decision cringes some independent game creators, who do not necessarily require many updates once the game is published.
The fact is that Google is now following in Apple’s footsteps on this level: the security of our phones and our data is one of the biggest issues of the moment. To show a white paw and to harden the tone on this subject is not surprising.
