Apple sent an email to its app developers telling them that if no updates had been made for two years, the app would be removed from the App Store.
The firm has sent everyone an email informing them that applications and games that have not been updated for two years will simply be deleted from the App Store.
It may seem a little cavalier and violent, but Apple has never hidden cleaning up among its millions of applications available on its store to track down apps that no longer meet house quality requirements. In summary, those that are discontinued do not offer tracking to users or no longer meet technical standards over time. In 2020, more than a million apps had been deleted and hundreds of thousands of developer accounts terminated, in particular due to attempted fraud.
30 days before eviction
Spotted by the site Eurogamer, the message of the company Protopop Games reacted. The game developer motivation, a fairly basic match-3, explained that he received an email because his game had not been updated for two years (it’s actually three years, he later admitted) and that Apple told him to remove his game soon ‘App Store without new review. This means that he now has 30 days to submit an update or correction of any kind.
I feel sick. Apple just sent me an email saying they’re removing my free game Motivoto because its more than 2 years old.
It’s part of their App improvement system.
This is not cool. Console games from 2000 are still available for sale.
This is an unfair barrier to indie devs.

” An unfair barrier for developers independents, ”he insists, explaining that his game is still fully functional. However, upon closer inspection on the App Store listing, the latest update to its game is a minor bug fix and therefore has remained the same for at least three years. He did not fill in the information concerning the confidentiality of the app intended for users (what data concerning you is exploited or not, how to contact the developer, etc.). The same goes for his other game, paying this time, Nimian Legends: BrightRidge HDan open-world fantasy adventure that hasn’t seen any improvements since it was adapted… to the iPhone Xs over three years ago.
Just providing this type of information is an update to the app that will keep it alive on the App Store. And for the good of its application, it is generally more reassuring for a potential player or user to see that the application benefits from more frequent monitoring and updates…
In its App Store Terms of Service for Developers and available online, Apple is pretty clear. ” To make it easier for customers to find apps that suit their needs, we want to make sure apps available on the App Store are functional and up-to-date.“, announces the support page. ” We have an ongoing app review process, removing apps that no longer work as intended, don’t follow current review guidelines, or are out of date. »
Games as Complete Works
This concerns apps and games on iPhone, iPad, Mac or even Apple TV. Not all content will be removed from the App Store, with Apple conducting individual review. This could, however, concern a few thousand developers, mainly games. But, as one of them points out on Twitter, the Apple company does this above all to keep its user recommendation algorithm relevant.
Over 70% of apps haven’t been updated in
Apple owns the #3 search engine in the world.
Search is powered by an algorithm.
Apple is trying to satisfy billions of searches & users with a framework to systematically improve discovery.

It is however true that a game which does not have the will to be a service or to contain purchases in app presents itself as a finished work when it is published and will no longer need to be touched up (like the games of yesteryear, in short…). Possibly technically to keep up with advances in Apple’s hardware. But when you know that this one is built to last several years…
Informed developers therefore have 30 days to complythat is to say, according to Apple’s guidelinessimply manifesting itself by bringing a touch-up to its product (bug correction, new content, additional services, various improvements, etc.).
After 30 days without a new review, the application is no longer accessible for new users, but remains usable for all those who already own it and associated with the developer. It can then be reintegrated into the App Store.
