With Soprano: à la vie à la mort, Disney+ signs its fourth content created especially for the French market. For the occasion, we went rummaging through the intricacies of the SVoD service catalog in order to concoct for you a small inventory of the French productions available on the platform.
Commissioned in 2019 with an already well-stocked catalog, Disney+ is quietly continuing its evolution by producing more and more original content to expand its offer. After entertaining us with excellent Star Wars and Marvel series, the SVoD platform decided to diversify its offer by investing heavily in “local” productions.
Since last February, no less than three “made in France” series have been released on the platform, and this is only the first wave. Other series, like Kaiser Karl (devoted to Karl Largefeld) or comedy Bad pick (with François Damiens and Vincent Dedienne) are planned by the end of the year, but while waiting to see them land, another original creation is looming.
From June 15, you can discover the first French documentary series created by Disney+ with Soprano: to life and death. In order to discover this series and all the other French content available on Disney+, all you need is a subscription to the service. The latter is available monthly for 8.99 euros or yearly for 89.90 euros (a saving of two months).
Family weekend
Family weekend is the first French production commissioned by Disney+. Led briskly by Éric Judor and directed by Pierre-François Martin-Laval and Sophie Reine, this family comedy presents the somewhat complicated daily life of a multi-step family.
This family is Fred’s. Every weekend, he picks up his three daughters aged 9, 12 and 15 from his home, but the respective mothers are never far away and always ready to put a spoke in his wheels. Add to that Emmanuelle, Fred’s latest conquest who is preparing a thesis in child psychology and you get an explosive cocktail.

Composed of 8 episodes, this series tackles with humor and tenderness subjects such as blended families, the acceptance of others or even childhood. Enough to make it an ideal entertainment for the whole family.
Para//els
With Para//els, Disney+ invites us to discover a series that contrasts radically with the usual productions of France. By its genre already, since there are currently only a few science fiction series entirely created in our regions. Inspired by Dark Where Stranger Things, Para//els invites us to discover a story drawing more towards the fantastic than the space opera, with a lot of time travel and parallel dimensions.
We follow four childhood friends, Bilal, Romane, Sam and Victor, a band of teenagers as we see everywhere, without history. One evening, while having a small party in their lair (a kind of old disused bunker), they are confronted with a mysterious event that separates them and will change them (sometimes literally) forever.

Scattered across time and space, the four protagonists will do everything to reunite and uncover the mysteries surrounding their separation. A quest that will allow them to learn more about themselves and confront them with some disturbing truths. A screenplay as intriguing as it is well done, polished production and a convincing cast are the keys to this very successful series which is a UFO in the French audiovisual landscape.
Oussekine
As indicated by his name, Oussekine is a mini-series devoted to the events surrounding the death of Malik Oussekine, its immediate repercussions and its impact on French society at the time. As a reminder, Malik Oussekine is a young student of Algerian origin who tragically died in 1986 under police beatings, in the midst of student protests and police repression.
Nearly 40 years after the events, this series plunges us into a meticulous reconstruction of the Paris of the time in order to transcribe the facts as accurately as possible, without ever lapsing into pathos or easy accusation. Beyond this cold reconstitution of the facts, Oussekine also presents the point of view of the Oussekine family, plunged into the heart of this turmoil. Tumults that crystallize a good part of the concerns and problems of France at the end of the 1980s.

Historical series useful in many ways, carried by a cast as prestigious as it is invested, Oussekine evokes many themes and social issues that turn out to be much more current than one might think at first glance. A viewing far from easy, but certainly necessary in 2022.
