Genesis will enrich its range with a brand new electric compact next year. Like the GV60, it should make the trip to Europe. It could be called G40, G50 or G60.
If the only Genesis you’ve heard of is the British rock band, that’s fine. Because the Korean firm of the same name, premium division of Hyundai Motor Group is not present on the Old Continent for the moment, while its models are only marketed on its native market, as well as in North America.
But that will change, since the Asian firm is working on the development of its electric range, allowing it to consider an arrival in Europe shortly. From the end of the year, if all goes well, while Genesis is preparing to launch the GV60, which will soon cross the Atlantic and it is already possible to pre-order this model in Germany. But the electric SUV will not remain alone for long.
A new connected compact for 2023
Indeed, according to The Korean Car Blog, the Korean manufacturer is currently working on the development of a brand new compact, probably prefigured by the Mint concept. For the moment known as “JE”, it could also begin its first road tests in the coming months, for a commercial launch scheduled for September 2023. A newcomer that will allow Genesis to make a nice place on segment C, already very competitive.
This newcomer, which could bear the name of G40, G50 or G60, should not have many rivals on the European market, while premium manufacturers are more present in the compact SUV segment, and not compact sedans. However, it could hunt on the lands of the Megane E-Tech, the Volkswagen ID 3, or even the Peugeot e-308, which should also have its electric version in the coming years. However, let’s qualify the statement since these three cars are not in the premium segment, unlike Genesis vehicles. Whatever, the trendy compact will be the first of the group in this market, while the future Kia EV5 should not arrive before 2025, while it will be necessary to wait until 2030 for the Ioniq 4.
Fast charging at 800 volts
For the time being, no information has been communicated by Genesis about the technical data sheet of this new electric compact. Nevertheless, a spokesperson for the brand, relayed by The Korean Car Blog had hinted that the next models will all be based on the E-GMP platform, already used by the Kia EV6 and Ioniq 5: “the E-GMP platform dedicated to electric vehicles, also known as a “skateboard”, can grow or shrink, and design changes are simple”. It is this platform that allows ultra-fast charging at 800 volts on compatible terminals.
This is what would explain the rapid development of this new compact, which will soon be followed by a series of other new models. Indeed, the Korean firm had announced its desire to launch no less than eight electric and hydrogen vehicles by 2030. Among them, the GV60, which will also be sold in Europe, as well as the electric versions of the GV70, GV80 and G80. It only remains now to wait until the formalization of this future model.
