Warner Bros. Discovery has announced to stop the global deployment of HBO Max, the streaming service will not arrive in France. Instead, the conglomerate plans to merge it with Discovery+, without much more being known.
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), a huge media, entertainment and film conglomerate, told Television Business International (TBI) that HBO Max’s global rollout was cancelled. This, even though the streaming platform (another one) was to land in France in 2023, with, among other things, a subscription including advertising.
HBO Max is going away…
Last April, we learned of the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery of $43 billion. Following this operation, the group’s plans have changed, as has the management. HBO Max was supposed to launch in Iceland, Turkey, Greece and the Baltics, but it won’t. Moreover, WBD had made a wave of hiring for ” develop and produce original French programs for HBO Max “. The former executive director of Canal+, Vera Pelketian, and Clémentine Bobin of Arte France had joined the group.
If the deployment of the service is suspended, it would seem that the development of original content will continue unaffected, just like in Spain. However, this is not the case in the Nordic countries, Central Europe, the Netherlands and Turkey where it is suspended.BIT also states that “ Some European and American shows are also being removed from HBO Max globally, including the Hungarian drama The Informant Swedish comedyLust and Kamikaze in Denmark“.
Warner Bros. Discovery actually plans to merge HBO Max with Discovery+, the streaming platform that Discovery owned (it makes sense) before the merger.
But not Discovery+ (at least not yet)
However, on the other hand, the rollout of Discovery+ continues. The SVoD service was even launched in Germany and Austria last week. According to information fromBITDiscovery+ would come to other countries and the group would adopt “different strategies for the two separate services before they were finally merged“.
If it does not yet have a name, we already know that this unified service will be launched in France, without WBD confirming a date.
