When watching YouTube videos on your TV, it’s hard to comment or read the descriptions. The streaming platform therefore transforms your smartphone into a kind of additional screen, to facilitate its use.
The YouTube application has been available on our televisions for 12 years, but since that time we have not had access to all the functions available on smartphones or computers. In the absence of a keyboard and reactive controls, difficult to comment on a video (worse, a live) or to read a description carefully. YouTube announces to change that and makes your smartphone a kind of additional screen, a viewing companion.
Two eyes, two screens
It all starts with an observation made by YouTube: “more than 80% of users watch TV with their phone in hand“. The app noticed that its users could simultaneously open YouTube on their TV and on their phone. With their smartphone, they also performed more than half of engagement actions (e.g. liking, subscribing) […] while watching videos on the TV“.
YouTube therefore announces that it is changing its strategy to improve its application for televisions. Rather than integrating new features, which will not necessarily be used, the application says to seek “to further link experiences on phones and on the big screen“.
Your smartphone becomes a viewing companion
YouTube is therefore launching a new feature for Android and iOS. It allows you to associate your smartphone with your TV. This allows you to interact with the videos while continuing to watch them on TV.
For this to work, the same YouTube account must be connected on both devices. Then, the application is launched on said devices; a window will open automatically on the smartphone and you have to click on “Associate“.
With this feature, you canread video descriptions, add comments, share videos with a friend“, etc. If YouTube hasn’t talked about it, a very practical use case would be that of lives. Being able to watch a live broadcast on your TV and react to it live in the chat would be really relevant.
YouTube has plans for its TV app
YouTube wants to make the phone “a versatile and interactive toolto improve the experience on TVs. The application also announces work on the integration of products that appear in the videos in order to display them so that you can buy them.
