MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 1050, its first SoC capable of supporting 5G millimeter (mmWave), the fastest variant of the new generation of cellular network.

With its new Dimensity 1050 announced today, MediaTek enters the club of chip designers compatible with the fastest variant of 5G. Engraved in 6 nm by TSMC, MediaTek’s new SoC is indeed the first capable of supporting millimeter 5G (mmWave) in the catalog of Taiwanese rival Qualcomm.
As Android Authority specifies, this chip will be able to dynamically switch between 5G mmWave and “classic” sub-6GHz connections depending on the context. A condition sine qua non to make the SoC viable on a day-to-day basis. Still rare, millimetric 5G is indeed limited in terms of range. It therefore remains very complementary to 5G sub-6GHz, which is more common and capable of transmitting over much larger areas.
A SoC capable of venturing beyond 6 GHz
“The Dimensity 1050, and its combination of sub-6GHz and mmWave technologies, will deliver end-to-end 5G experiences, uninterrupted connectivity and superior power efficiency to meet the demands of everyday users.“, explains MediaTek in its press release. “With faster, more reliable connections, and advanced camera technology, this chip offers powerful features to help device makers differentiate their smartphone lineups…“.
In fact, and beyond this support for 5G mmWave, the Dimensity 1050 is a relatively classic SoC. There are 8 CPU cores (two high-performance Cortex-A78 cores at 2.2 GHz and six high-efficiency Cortex-A55 cores at 2 GHz), and an Arm Mali-G610 MC3 GPU. This new chip supports Full HD + screens at 144 Hz, photo sensors up to 108 Mpx and supports Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. Intended primarily for smartphones, it will arrive on a first batch of mobiles from the 3rd quarter of 2022.
