In April 2022, Edge was used slightly more than desktop Safari globally. The Microsoft browser has been experiencing an interesting dynamic for a few months despite the unparalleled domination of Google Chrome.

The market for web browsers on PC is quite specific and can vary greatly depending on the country. However, from a global point of view, Google Chrome remains far ahead of its competitors in market share. In the rest of the field, the fight is fierce between the remaining big players. In recent times, Safari (Apple) had accustomed us to occupy the second place. But now Edge (Microsoft) comes to play the spoilsports and steals this place.
This is what StatCounter’s April 2022 desktop browser report shows:
- 66.64% market share for Google Chrome;
- 10.07% for Microsoft Edge;
- 9.61% for Apple Safari;
- 7.86% for Mozilla Firefox;
- 2.43% for Opera;
- 0.97% for Internet Explorer.

StatCounter offers the same kind of analysis for the French computer web browser market. Here too, Edge has passed Safari (and for a few months already), but Firefox remains well attached to second place in France.
A great dynamic for Microsoft Edge
Nevertheless, the dynamic is very positive overall for Microsoft’s browser. In 2021, already, Edge recorded a big increase in its popularity. A little over two years ago, the Chromium version of Edge made its official debut. As a reminder, Chromium is an open source project – which also serves as the base for Google Chrome. Through this initiative, Microsoft promised to develop a browser that is faster, more pleasant and better adapted to the evolutions of the web.
It seems that the recipe is working and slowly but surely attracting more users. However, the top ranking reminds us that many people on Windows 10 or Windows 11 still see Edge as a one-time tool to download Google Chrome.
