The branch of Samsung responsible for producing screens will stop production of LCD panels this June, reports the Korea Times. The firm had already considered such a shutdown in 2020, but the pandemic had delayed it.

After the announcement of a new chapter with the fanfare arrival at CES 2022 of the QD-OLED, it is time for Samsung Display to close another one. The branch of the Korean giant responsible for the production of panels has decided to end its production of LCD screens as of this month of June, reports the Korea Times.
The causes are quite clear. First, Samsung is no longer competitive enough with certain Chinese and Taiwanese counterparts. Then, LCD prices have tended to collapse in recent months.
implacable reasons
Initially, the Seoul firm had plans to stop its activities on the LCD from 2020, further indicates the Korea Times. But its parent company, Samsung Electronics, reportedly asked it to continue due to sudden price increases on LCD panels caused by the pandemic.
It also turns out that the end of its production of LCD panels would be directly linked to the fact that Samsung Electronics has recently joined forces with other producers.
What consequences if you want to buy an LCD TV
Whether for economic reasons or simply for taste (some people do not support Oled), you may be interested in buying a screen equipped with an LCD panel. Does this decision mean we have to hurry? Not really.
It should be understood that Samsung completely separates its activities of production of panels, returning to Samsung Display, and sales of electronic products, which is responsible for Samsung Electronics. Clearly, there is every reason to think that Samsung will continue to offer LCD televisions and screens, but that these will be equipped with panels produced by other companies.
It should also be added that LCD screens and televisions are still very present and continue to sell widely. Samsung Display simply no longer sees the point of continuing to evolve in this market.
Samsung Display will now focus more on producing OLED and Quantum Dot (QD) panels. Employees of the LCD sector should be transferred to this last branch.
