Quite confidentially, Xiaomi’s Black Shark division has launched its new batch of gaming smartphones internationally: the Black Shark 5 and Black Shark 5 Pro, already available in China for a few months.
Some choose their smartphone by look. Others, clearly not. Future customers of the Black Shark 5 Pro, for example, do not bother with this kind of trivialities. Above all, they are looking for raw power. Suffice to say that these people will not be disappointed.
6.67″ Full HD+, 10-bit, HDR10+ OLED screen and – above all – refreshed at 144 Hz and sampled at 720 Hz: the Black Shark 5 Pro sets the tone. A small circular cutout houses a 16-megapixel photo sensor, but nothing else can interfere with the user’s eye during a game. Unlike others, the unlocking is also done thanks to a fingerprint sensor mounted on the ignition button.
This beautiful baby weighing 220 grams and almost 10 mm thick of course has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. The smartphone can be configured with 8, 12 or 16 GB of RAM, and between 128 and 256 GB of ROM in UFS 3.1.
We wrote it above: the Black Shark 5 Pro has four physical triggers arranged on the right edge of the device. They are retractable, and can be configured as shortcuts for a wide variety of interactions. They also offer a much more comfortable gaming experience than using the touch screen, and avoid players having to walk around with a controller in their bag. Too bad for the Razer Kishi V2.
For autonomy, the Black Shark 5 Pro relies on a 4650 mAh battery, rechargeable at 120 W – like the Xiaomi 12 Pro. The press release claims that you can reach 100% autonomy in 15 minutes.
The Xiaomi subsidiary is also confident about heat dissipation, provided by a 5320 mm2 vapor chamber.
Finally, in photos, the smartphone offers a configuration with three sensors: a 108-megapixel wide-angle (1/1.52″; aperture at ƒ/1.8), a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle and a 5-megapixel telemacro.
Black Shark 5: affordable gaming
The alpha shark’s little brother comes in a very similar form. We keep the 6.67″ AMOLED screen clocked at 144 Hz, the 10 mm thickness, the retractable triggers on the right edge and the 4650 mAh battery rechargeable at 120 W.
No, what changes is of course the SoC. This time, we downgrade to a Snapdragon 870 5G much slower than the 8 Gen 1. However, the chip remains voluntary (we are talking about around 700,000 points on AnTuTu), and sufficient to enjoy any game in average quality. /high to 60 frames per second.
This second model also swaps its main photo sensor for a 64 megapixel camera of lesser quality (1/1.97″; aperture at ƒ/1.8).

The Black Shark 5 and Black Shark 5 Pro are already on sale on the manufacturer’s official website. They are available in Explorer Gray and Mirror Black colors for the first, and Nebula White or Stellar Black for the second.
