According to some information from South Korea, Apple will integrate a more powerful front camera into the iPhone 14 this year and which was originally intended for the iPhone 15.
The presentation of smartphone cameras is taking up more and more space during presentations as the quality of the sensors used improves. Last year, we saw Apple bring some interesting new features such as Cinematic mode or ProRAW and ProRes formats to the rear, but the firm would bring significant improvements to these front sensors this time as well.
A failure of a Chinese supplier
It looks like the front camera is indeed one of the big updates coming to the upcoming iPhone 14 models according to the Korean site. Korea IT News.
This information is to be taken with a grain of salt, but Apple would seek to supply Korea for its next selfie cameras. This seems to correspond with old rumors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who also announced new features to come on the front camera of the iPhone 14.
A sensor originally intended for release next year
Apple would trust LG Innotek and Sharp for these new sensors. This would be the very first time that the Californian firm has chosen a Korean supplier to manufacture its front sensor. This component would be bought quite inexpensively by Apple and would cost three times less than the rear camera, but it would now become a high-end component of Apple’s next smartphone according to the Korean site.
According to this source, the company originally planned to keep these sensors for the iPhone 15, but had to hastily revise its schedule. This is apparently due to quality issues encountered during testing during the production of the selfie modules in China. The Chinese supplier in question would therefore have been replaced and LG Innotek would have found itself having to supply the front cameras of the iPhone 14 as replacements.
Rumors that come together
This rumor is not the only one concerning an improvement of the front camera of the next iPhones. Indeed, a tweet from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from last April already mentioned a new front camera that would gain autofocus, but also a larger aperture.
This new sensor would therefore make it possible to obtain better results in low light situations, but also better background blur for portraits. The iPhone 14 would now benefit from an aperture of f / 1.9 against f / 2.2 currently. This internal change would also be accompanied by a new design since Apple would finally abandon the famous notch of its smartphones and adopt for the first time a new design with a double punch that would house both this new lens, but also all the sensors. necessary for 3D facial recognition.
