The entry-level iPad should in turn switch to USB-C, thereby permanently removing the Lightning from this product category.
Farewell Lightning, we won’t miss you! The European Union has decided: in autumn 2024, USB-C must become the universal charger and brands will have to comply, including Apple, the last major brand to offer a proprietary port to recharge its mobile devices such as the ‘iPhone or iPad. Well… not all iPads, since only the entry-level iPad is still equipped with the Lightning port.
An iPad 10 in USB-C
Released in September 2021, the 9th generation iPad looks dated. Its A13 Bionic chip already equipped the iPhone 11 in 2019, its design with large borders is aging and it still recharges in Lightning while the iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad Pro have already switched to USB-C. But Apple will not recycle ad vitam aeternam and will eventually bring this range into modern times as well.
According to 9to5Mac, the 10th generation iPad should bring some new features to Apple’s cheapest tablet. On the program, an A14 Bionic chip (that of the iPhone 12, providing 30% additional performance), 5G and a USB-C port. Finally !
USB-C brings many benefits. In addition to the fact that it is a universal connection that is now found everywhere, USB-C is also faster than Lightning and allows the use of third-party devices such as a portable SSD without a dongle.
The screen would also change slightly. Still according to the same source, the new entry-level iPad will have a Retina display with the same definition as that of the iPad Air“. Remember, however, that the difference is not obvious: 2160 x 1620 pixels for the current iPad 9 against 2360 x 1640 pixels for the iPad Air. This could, however, mean an enlargement of the display area, from 10.2 inches to 10.9 inches, like the iPad Air. We would nevertheless remain on a very traditional LCD panel, leaving the more expensive models their wide coverage of the colorimetric spectrum.
It remains to be seen now if the design will also change to give a real facelift to the traditional iPad and definitely throw away the old design. Another big question: will its price remain so low? See you in September to find out.
