Apple presented its new MacBook Air, the company’s first PC to take advantage of the new Apple M2 chip.
As expected, Apple took advantage of the opening of its WWDC conference to present the new version of its entry-level laptop, the MacBook Air. As with the launch of the Apple M1 chip two years ago, this will be the first Apple computer to experiment with the firm’s new ARM chip, the new Apple M2.
This new MacBook Air M2 will therefore take advantage of this chip change to undergo a facelift from Apple. Like the other laptops of the firm, the MacBook Air M2 will thus benefit from a more industrial design with less curve. The angles are more marked and we are faced with a design much closer to that of the MacBook Pro M1.
Concretely, this also results in the arrival of the MagSafe charging connector on the MacBook Air M2. In the event of a shock or getting caught in the cable, the magnetic plug will simply disconnect, without dropping the whole PC with it. Apple also announces a design 20% more compact in volume than the latest MacBook Air M1 with a total thickness of 11.3 mm. The advertised weight is 1.2 kg.
On the side of the screen too, Apple has revised its copy. Like the latest MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air M2 will integrate a notch at the top of the screen to accommodate the 1080p webcam. The display itself is also enlarged thanks to thinner borders. We will also find a diagonal of 13.6 inches as well as a maximum brightness of 500 cd / m², announced as 25% higher than that of the previous model.
A Touch ID-enabled keyboard
Audio and keyboard have not been left out. Apple has integrated four speakers compatible with spatial audio, as well as several beamforming microphones to better capture your voice in a noisy environment for video calls. For the keyboard, the MacBook Air M2 also benefits from the integration of Touch ID with a fingerprint reader positioned at the top right.
MacBook Air M2 obliges, the design is particularly light and, above all, silent. We are therefore dealing here with a computer without a fan. What nevertheless ensure a day of autonomy according to Apple, with 18 hours of video playback. However, we will have to see how the M2 chip behaves in real use. Still on the side of autonomy, the manufacturer indicates that the MacBook Air M2 will be able to take advantage of a fast charging system up to 67 W.
For now, we still do not know when and at what price the new MacBook Air M2 will be marketed. It will be available in four colors: silver, space gray, starlight and midnight. In the United States, the MacBook Air M2 will be available at 1199 dollars, or 1121 euros excluding tax.
