Made official a few days ago, Sony’s new noise reduction headphones are available and are already seeing their price drop. Thanks to a discount in the basket at Boulanger, the WH-1000XM5 goes to 347 euros instead of the 419 euros requested.
Building on its reputation in the audio sector, Sony has established itself as a reference with its high-end Bluetooth headsets with active noise reduction. The Sony WH-1000XM3 and WH-1000XM4 turned out to be excellent headphones, even becoming the best in their category. The new reference of the Japanese firm therefore has the heavy task of doing as well as its predecessors. For this Sony decides to completely review the design with the desire to offer the “best noise reduction” on the market. Offered at a more expensive price, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is already the victim of a promotion and has already lost more than 70 euros of its price.

A helmet that changes its look, but remains comfortable
Launched two years ago, the excellent XM4 gave way to its successor: the WH-1000XM5. Sony’s new premium headset breaks away from its predecessors and offers an all-new design. The XM5 has a more refined and flexible headband giving a more minimalist and refined look. We find the quality of manufacture of the brand, with beautiful finishes in particular thanks to the matte “felted” coating. On the other hand, this change leads to the inability of the XM5 to fold up, which is quite a shame.
Once on the head the helmet remains comfortable. However, you may feel a pressure point at the headband, but the padding reduces the discomfort caused. As for the leatherette pads, they completely encompass the ears and ensure good passive isolation.
Noise reduction always up to par
With already impeccable noise reduction on the previous model, the new Sony WH-1000XM5 does not seem to be an exception to the rule. Always with the aim of offering the best noise reduction on the market, Sony has doubled the number of microphones on its headphones (four on the XM4 against eight on the XM5). Result: the ANC of the 1000XM5 is a marked improvement over the M4. An atmospheric pressure sensor is also present to detect when the user is on a plane, as is technical fabric on the microphones to filter gusts of wind and prevent them from being transcribed into the speakers.
Call quality has also been improved. With the help of four microphones and AI, the XM5 best isolates your voice from ambient noise and captures your voice clearly without distortion. We also find the “Speak-to-Chat” mode to pause the music when speaking, touch controls on the right earpiece with the “quick attention” mode, voice assistants that can be activated directly by voice or the adaptive sound control which automatically manages the reduction.
A beautiful sound signature, and comfortable autonomy
Regarding sound quality, the Sony WH-1000XM5 incorporates new transducers, going from a diameter of 40 mm to a diameter of 30 mm. According to the brand, the new transducers are stiffer and lighter thanks to carbon fiber. In theory, we should therefore find the same sound reproduction as on the WH-1000XM4. According to some colleagues, the WH-1000XM5 displays even more precision and offers a “more natural” rendering, but with less bass highlighted. Otherwise, we find the three Bluetooth audio codecs SBC, AAC and LDAC. The headset also features Sony’s DSEE Extreme algorithm, as well as multipoint Bluetooth compatibility.
Finally, the Sony headphones are very durable since the brand announces up to 40 hours of use without noise reduction, and 30 hours with this option activated. As for charging, it will take place quickly via USB-C. You can thus gain 3 hours of listening time in just 3 minutes of charging.
