After several postponements, the arrival of the Tesla Semi now seems imminent: the firm has finally opened orders.
To say the Tesla Semi was expected is an understatement. Mentioned for the first time in Elon Musk’s Master Plan in 2016, then officially revealed in the course of 2017, the electric truck is starting to be desired. While the entry into production was initially scheduled for 2021, it was then postponed.
In particular, the Covid-19 epidemic and all its consequences, including the shortage of semiconductors. The same one that has also forced Tesla to stop orders for some of its models, including the Cybertruck, which is no longer available outside the United States. The firm stresses that it wants to concentrate on the production of its current range, in order to honor the orders already placed.
A salty price
It is therefore not without a certain astonishment that we learn that Tesla has just opened the order book for its Semi, as confirmed by the brand’s website. Primarily dedicated to businesses, the electric truck can be reserved for a check for 5,000 dollars, or approximately 4,766 euros at the current exchange rate. It will then be necessary to add 15,000 dollars (about 14,290 euros) to confirm the order within 10 days.
As the brand’s website specifies, it will cost $20,000 for each additional Semi. Please note that the $5,000 deposit may be refunded. As a reminder, this newcomer to the range is displayed at 150,000 dollars in its entry-level version and 180,000 dollars for the most expensive variant. For now, orders are open in the United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, while France will still have to wait a bit.
Deliveries in 2023
The first copies of the Tesla Semi should therefore arrive on the roads during the course of next year, when it will be produced in Texas, alongside the Cybertruck. Several large companies have already ordered several copies of the truck, including DHL, FedEx, PepsiCo and Walmart. Others should follow suit.
Available in two versions, displaying between 482 and 800 kilometers of autonomy, this newcomer will face tough competition. Indeed, several companies also want to enter this segment, including Nikola Motor, Kenworth or Cummins and BDY.
