Virtual reality headsets have come a long way in recent years. Meta now offers a new version of its Oculus Quest, the famous VR headset. This type of helmet becomes even more interesting when it takes advantage of a promotion… which is the case during the sales.
Meta (ex-Facebook Group) has distinguished itself for several years in the virtual reality headset sector. The second version of the Oculus Quest, now called Meta Quest 2, is proving to be very successful: it can be used alone as with a PC, allowing very realistic immersion, especially in game. A revised design for the 2nd version
The Oculus Quest 2, finally the Meta Quest 2, first started by changing color, going from the black of the first version, to white, PlayStation style. The attachment system, which is always a little tricky on VR helmets, has also been revised. Exit the scratches on the sides, it is now an adjustable elastic band. This system tries to better distribute the weight of the helmet, the latter sometimes tending to pull on the face. Fortunately, this version is also lighter on the scale, with 68 grams less for a total of 503 grams. The headset is more compact overall, making it more convenient to store. The Touch controllers have also been completely redesigned: they are thus more ergonomic and more pleasant to hold.
In addition, in 2021, the Quest 2 benefited from a version v2. Meta has thus provided a silicone layer which can be placed on the face foam of the helmet. Storage has been doubled from 64 GB to 128 GB, with no change in price. For spectacle wearers, an adapter is provided.
More power and range
The screens of the Quest 2 are unfortunately not OLED: no infinite contrasts here, because it is LCD instead. The definition of 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye is pleasing. We lose the grid effect that was visible on the first version of the helmet, a great step forward. Above all, the refresh rate goes up to 90 Hz, which seemed essential, in the absence of having 120 Hz.
The Meta Quest 2 is powered by a Qualcomm chip, a Snapdragon XR2, more powerful than that of the Quest 1. 6 GB of RAM supports this. Overall navigation is thus more fluid and the headset is able to handle demanding games such asHalf Life: Alyx. The great novelty is the possibility of using the headphones alone, wirelessly, not connected to a PC and its video card. Of course, to enjoy more power, the player can connect it via a USB-C cable. Be careful, the latter will not allow you to recharge the headphones at the same time…
