Volvo will finally offer the CarPlay function on its range of cars equipped with Android Automotive. The promise to deploy this technology was several years old.
More and more cars are being sold with the infotainment offered by Google, Android Automotive OS. This is the case of the Renault Mégane E-Tech, but also of the Volvo XC40 Recharge. However, these cars do not offer the same experience, nor access to similar applications. In particular, the Mégane E-Tech is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while the XC40 offered no such compatibility.
CarPlay finally available
With the 2.2 update of its system, Volvo will finally offer Apple CarPlay. This new feature will be available from Volvo, and also Polestar, on all vehicles equipped with Android Automotive. Google’s OS is found throughout Volvo’s new 2022 range of cars, including thermals.
Among the other new features, we also learn that it will be possible to use video applications when the car is parked. Convenient when loading your Volvo.
It is interesting to point out that here, Android Automotive is a solution that can be integrated differently between mobile manufacturers. It will be interesting to see how manufacturers can customize the experience of Google’s OS to differentiate themselves.
