The General Motors group could return to Europe and market certain electric models there, including the Cadillac Lyric and the Hummer EV.
A few weeks ago, we told you about a possible return of General Motors to Europe, when it has deserted the Old Continent since 2017 already. A departure coinciding with the sale of Opel to the PSA groupthe last brand of the American group to be marketed here.
If this withdrawal from the European market had been motivated in particular by disappointing figures and a desire to limit losses, General Motors could finally make its comeback over the next few years. If nothing is yet recorded, our colleagues from Automotive News, however, give us some details on this possible return.
Two models to come
If the group was not really ahead in terms of electrification, which undoubtedly also motivated its decision to leave Europe, the latter is starting to catch up. Indeed, its various brands have now made good progress and several trendy models are now marketed in the United States, including the Cadillac Lyric and the Hummer EV. Two vehicles that could just be sold soon with us according to our colleagues, without specifying which version of the Hummer was concerned (SUV or pick-up, even if the SUV makes much more sense).
If the details about this hypothetical return to our countries are therefore still rare, Automotive News points out that the General Motors group would also be thinking about the creation of a start-up specialized in mobility in Europe. Little is known yet, but it could be a car-sharing company, like what Renault offers with Mobilize or Stellantis with Free2Move.
A promising market
For Mahmoud Samara, appointed by General Motors to support the restart of operations on the Old Continent, “Europe is the second market for electric vehicles and fastest growing in the world, representing a significant opportunity as GM is poised to roll out a full line of electric cars“. However, a spokesperson for the group says no decision has been made yet.
A return to Europe would be quite wise for the American firm, as sales of electric cars have climbed 53.4% since last year over the whole of the 1st quarter of 2022 according to a report by ACEA. In France, the increase reached 42.7%. Suffice to say that Europe represents real potential for GM, which could take advantage of it to expand its customer base.
