An original concept that has its effect
The Nothing Ear (1) are the first products of Carl Pei’s new company, and immediately we see that the design of the earphones and the case stands out strongly from the competition. The earphones focus on originality with a transparent look. The concept has the merit of being atypical and rather pleasant, even if the in-ear format with the short stem is reminiscent of that of the AirPods Pro. The headphones are rather pleasant to wear on a daily basis: you can use them for 3 to 4 consecutive hours without feeling embarrassed.
The charging case itself is much larger than what can be found in the competition while also being completely transparent. Regarding autonomy, it takes 4 hours with the noise reduction activated, against 5 to 6 hours without. In our test, they lasted longer, but many competing headphones now offer even better battery life. The charging case, it is possible to extend it to 24 or 34 hours depending on the mode.
A successful audio experience
The Nothing ears (1) offer good passive isolation, but an active noise reduction function is also included. The latter has three power modes and does a good job of masking most constant outside noise, which will be perfect for train journeys for example. Of course, Nothing’s earphones are not at the headphone level of the WF-1000XM4, but they still manage to outperform some similarly priced benchmarks like the Huawei FreeBuds 4i or the Beats Studio Buds.
On the audio side, even if they are not the most powerful headphones in their category, the Ear (1) offer a well-balanced sound rendering that takes care of the bass and midrange, and offers a very convincing spatialization. The Ear (1) make some concessions and rely on the SBC and AAC codecs. Nothing continues to update its product, and now offers the possibility of using Google Assistant and Siri thanks to gesture control. Concretely, these voice assistants will also make it possible to control the headphones by voice in addition to touch controls and can be used to call a contact, change tracks or modify the sound volume in the headphones.
