On the occasion of Google I/O 2022, Google took stock of the importance of tablets in its ecosystem and presented some new features integrated into Android 13.
For Google, “tablets are the future of computing“. You can believe it or not, but the Mountain View company seems to believe in it hard as iron and is finally investing some effort in this long neglected format, which will perhaps finally allow for worthy competition. for the iPad. The Google I/O 2022 was an opportunity to present the new features to come.
A new tablet interface for Android 13
Already with Android 12L, Google showed its willingness to take larger screen devices into account. With Android 13, it’s downright a new interface dedicated to them.
First of all, there is a taskbar centered at the bottom of the screen, as is the case on ChromeOS, Windows 11 or macOS. This allows, among other things, to facilitate access to the most used applications, but also multitasking. It is also possible to drag and drop applications directly from this taskbar on the screen to create a split view with several apps.
The rest of the interface is of course not to be outdone and everything has been revised to facilitate use on the big screen. This is the case for example of the application drawer. Stylus management has also been improved so that the palm of the hand does not create unwanted interactions on the screen.
Many updated apps
Of course, the system is not enough if the software ecosystem does not follow. Apple understood this well when it moved from Intel to ARM (Apple Silicon) on its computers and offered very wide compatibility from day one.
Here, Google wanted to motivate by example, which is rather good news when you know how little enthusiasm the brand can have when it comes to pushing its own applications on its various systems (we will remember YouTube Music on Wear OS…). Thus, Google promises to update more than twenty of its applications in the coming weeks to optimize them for tablets, including Google Maps, YouTube Music and Messages. In addition, very popular applications will also follow the movement like TikTok, Facebook and Zoom. Finally, the Google Play Store itself has been completely redesigned (see front page image) to better occupy the space offered on the tablet screen.
It remains to be seen now which will be the first tablets to take advantage of these great innovations.
